Beijing 2008 Olympic Mascots: The Five Fuwa Symbolism

Olympic mascots seem to have become multiple per Olympics and the Beijing Olympics takes it to the ultimate with there being five mascots. The five Beijing 2008 Olympics mascots are called the Fuwa.

The Fuwa are children-like colorful mascots meant to symbolize friendship and peace to the children of the world. The Fuwa's names are Chinese names used to show affection to children. Also, when put together the names translate to Welcome to Beijing. They all have Beijing 2008 and the Olympic Rings symbol on their bellies.

Each Fuwa is a different color. The colors are taken from the colors of the five Olympics Rings: Blue, Black, Red, Yellow, and Green. Four of the Fuwa represent popular Chinese animals while the fifth represents the Olympic flame. They also represent the five elements of nature: sea, forest, fire, earth, and sky. Each Fuwa also represents a certain blessing that the Chinese hope to present to the world with their mascots.

Beibei - This is the blue Fuwa. This Fuwa represents a fish. It kind of looks like it is wearing a fish, as its hair/headwear is a fish head looking up. This mascot sends the blessing of prosperity, which is related to the Chinese tradition of fish as a symbol of surplus.

Jingjing - This is the black Fuwa. This Fuwa represents a panda. It is very much like a panda in how it is colored, so much so it almost does not even look like a child, but rather just a panda. The lotus designs on the head represent the forest. Jingjing sends the blessing of happiness.

Huanhuan - This is the red Fuwa. This Fuwa represents the Olympic Flame. Its headpiece is basically a fire design of flames. This Fuwa sends the blessing of passion.

Yingying - This is the yellow Fuwa. Well, it is at least supposed to be representing the yellow ring of the Olympic rings, but it looks quite orange. This Fuwa represents the Tibetian Antelope. It has horns on its headdress to make it look a little like an antelope. This Fuwa sends the blessing of health.
